Action finally

As the Athletics Association of Barbados (AAB) prepares to roll out its 2021 season after several interruptions, two senior national coaches are happy to see local track and field return tomorrow afternoon at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex.
Olympian and head of Quantum Leap Gabriel Burnett along with Alwyn Babb, an IAAF Level IV certified veteran coach both said this was a significant step for local track and field after months of setbacks.
“I think it is a significant step for local athletics because it has been hard for the athletes that have been training since last year. Especially since the season came to an abrupt end,” Burnett said.

Local track and field coaches say it will be a tough assignment to adequately prepare athletes for the April 24 start of the new season.
In fact, national coach Alwyn Babb believes there will be a decline in the number of competitors for the first two meets at the
Usain Bolt Sports Complex.
“I think the numbers will be reduced somewhat because of preparation time. Some athletes have had the opportunity to stay as fit as possible but in terms of organised training we were unable to do that. Hopefully after the third event we will see some improved performances leading to qualification for regional meets,” Babb told
Netball webinars start April 7

The Barbados Netball Association has planned a series of webinars which will be held during the months of April and May. This is the Association’s way of remaining in contact with its stakeholders during the COVID -19 period, while at the same time providing informative, educational, fun and physical activity to keep players engaged. All the sessions will be held virtually, via Zoom.
This series will carry the title “On The Ball – Off The Court” with the theme, “Rebuilding Mental and Physical Health”, and will kick off with a launch on Wednesday, April 7, at 6 p.m. The launch will serve as what would have been the opening ceremony of the 2021 League Season. The BNA president will welcome the netball fraternity, netball stakeholders and the media, and introduce the presenters of the ten webinars.
Qualifying possible

Senior national coach Alwyn Babb is not surprised that so far none of Barbados’ hopefuls has qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. But he also believes that it is not too late.
“I am not surprised because the international and regional competitions since March (2020) have been closed down. Right at the beginning of the outdoor season which begins traditionally in March, I believe that countries were closed and limited travel was happening because of COVID.
“So, I am not surprised that we have not had any qualifiers as yet. We are seeing a resumption of competition now on the indoor circuit where the NCAA has started. I suspect that once that happens other international bodies and organisations will press ahead as normal,” Babb told

The Athletics Association of Barbados community-based meets could be a blessing in disguise as more people within various parishes are getting a close-up opportunity to see young talented athletes compete, says veteran national coach Alwyn Babb.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the AAB has been unable to host nationals and with the unavailability of the National Stadium they have been forced to host events on a small scale around the island.
“I think the AAB made a big effort to get some track and field going at the start of the season by going into various communities and so far, it has been very successful. I think the meets at various grounds whet the appetite of those sports-loving spectators,” Babb said.
