When Republican lawmakers filed a bill last month to bar transgender women from competing against other women at schools and universities in North Carolina, LGBTQ advocates called it part of a new national wave of anti-transgender bills. Scientists and doctors who study and treat transgender athletes are calling it anti-science. North Carolina’s House Bill 358 (HB 358), like bills in more than 30 states pushed by the conservative Christian group Alliance Defending Freedom, is predicated on the premise that transgender women are simply men pretending to be women.

North Carolina Still Allows Professionals to Practice Conversion Therapy on Minors
For 14 months, Seven Atsilaâs life was a nightmare.Â
The then 15-year-old Waxhaw resident, who was assigned female at birth but now identifies as two-spirit, an indigenous term used to describe someone who has both masculine and feminine traits, had been struggling with his gender identity along with other behavioral issues.Â
His parents thought it would be helpful to enroll Atsila at Solstice East, a treatment center outside of Asheville for adolescent girls struggling with everything from ADHD and academic issues to substance abuse and addiction, in 2015.Â
This is where Atsila, now 22, says he was forced to undergo conversion therapy while he continued to struggle with his gender identity.
New protections could be coming for LGBTQ community in North Carolina
ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (WLOS) New protections could be a reality for members of the LGBTQ community in North Carolina.
This week, a group of state legislators filed a package of bills that includes a full repeal of House Bill 2. The push comes five years after the controversial bathroom bill, which restricted transgender access to public bathrooms, was first passed.
The package also included a bill that would put a statewide nondiscrimination law into place.
Advocates with the Campaign for Southern Equality said they’ve been working on this legislation for years.
