Covid-19 thriving in Terengganu because people ignore SOPs, says state health director

PUTRAJAYA: The increased infection rate in Terengganu is happening because people are not observing Covid-19 preventive measures, says the state Health Department. In a Facebook post, Terengganu Health director Dr Nor Azimi Yunus said the three-digit increases in the state over the past few days was not surprising . At present, there are 14 people being treated at intensive care units here. We are not surprised at all, because the behaviour of the Terengganu people has allowed Covid-19 to thrive in the state, wrote Dr Nor Azimi. She shared five examples of Covid-19 cases in Terengganu caused by neglecting standard operating procedures (SOP).

Pix for representational purpose only/BERNAMA KUALA TERENGGANU: Two more COVID-19 fatalities were recorded in Besut yesterday, making it the district with the highest death toll at 10 out of the 17 for Terengganu, said state Health director Dr Nor Azimi Yunus “The latest deaths involved a 71-year-old man from Kampung Pelagat 3 and a 55-year-old woman from Kampung Bukit Tumbuh. “Every death due to COVID-19 is very heartbreaking because the person who manages the body is another party,” she said in a post on her Facebook page. She said even when in hospital or at quarantine centres, COVID-19 patients also could not meet family members.

Covid-19: One teacher, 11 students at Terengganu school test positive

PETALING JAYA: Eleven students and one teacher from a secondary school in Setiu, Terengganu, have tested positive for Covid-19. State health department director Dr Nor Azimi Yunus said the students and teacher, from SM Imtiaz in Saujana, Setiu, were confirmed to have contracted the virus after a targeted screening. “The screening was done to detect as many positive cases as possible in this school. They will be isolated and given treatment. “Only through this can the chain of transmission be broken swiftly, ” she said in a Facebook post on Thursday (April 29). According to Sinar Harian, the school will be closed for 14 days until May 11 to allow sanitisation work and contact tracing.

Tahlil event among causes of increase of Covid-19 cases in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU, March 6: The decision of a family to hold a tahlil event with quite a large number of attendees without complying with the standard operating procedures (SOP) were among the causes of the increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases in Terengganu today. State Health director Nor Azimi Yunus said the cases involved several families from Johor, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Penang who returned to Terengganu for a grandfather’s funeral. “Usually, a funeral will be followed by a tahlil event. Forty-five family members attended the event and 15 of them were tested positive for COVID-19. “There were symptomatic individuals among the family members, hence the huge number of infection. Those individuals should not have made that inter-state travel or should have complied with the SOP to avoid infection,” he said in a posting on his Facebook page today.

COVID-19: Four Terengganu excos offices closed for 14 days

KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 18: Four Terengganu executive councillors’ (exco) offices in Wisma Darul Iman here, are closed for 14 days from yesterday until Jan 30 after five positive COVID-19 cases were found in the building. State Health Department director, Dr Nor Azimi Yunus said the closures were to enable sanitation works to be carried out in the effort to curb the spread of the pandemic in the area. The four offices which were closed were those of the State Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Committee’s office; State Human Development, Dakwah, and Information Committee’s office; State Agriculture, Food Industries, Plantations, Commodities and Rural Development’s office and the State Syariah Implementation, Education and Higher Education’s office.
