ALPENA Schools in Northeast Michigan face many challenges maintaining bus fleets and scheduling new bus purchases.
Many local school districts have older buses that often travel hundreds of thousands of miles over the course of a school year, adding wear and tear to the buses and maintenance costs to a district’s budget.

∫ The Alpena Community College Board of Trustees approved the purchase of 10 ThinkPad laptop computers in the amount of $20,250 from Lenovo which will be used during TRiO Talent Search summer camps. The purchase was made using TRiO Talent Search funds.
During the five-day summer camp, students will learn the fundamentals of game design through the development and planning of game maps, character creation, Java coding, using programming logic and animation, with the end result of creating and publishing a game on the site platform.
The college received three bids for the computer purchase, but college officials did not recommend the lowest bid because it did not meet specifications.

ALPENA A $5 million proposed general fund budget for the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District’s 2021-22 fiscal year will be making its rounds to school boards within the educational service district for approval.
School district officials and boards of education within the three-county service district are afforded the opportunity to provide feedback before the AMA ESD Board of Education adopts the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, beginning July 1.

ALPENA–Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District officials during a facility committee meeting on Thursday expressed frustration over leaks in their newly installed roof at Pied Piper School.
The AMA ESD spent a little over $94,200 from its special education fund balance for its leaky roof to be replaced as part of facility upgrades to the school. While the previous leak appears to be fixed, educational service district officials suspect the new leak stems from the old problem.

Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District has been named one of this year’s 10 Education Excellence Award winners and has received a $2,500 grant for the program, Interactivity: Delivered Expert to Student.
The Education Excellence Awards are hosted by the SET SEG Foundation in partnership with the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB).
Jamie McClintic, the AMA ESD’s occupational therapist, was instrumental in getting this award and grant, according to Larry Johns, Pied Piper School principal and special education supervisor for the AMA ESD.
“Dr. Jamie McClintic is our occupational therapist,” Johns said. “And she’s been with our organization for 20 years, and she provides occupational therapy services to our entire region.
