Local school board roundup: RCAS BOE seats two | News, Sports, Jobs

Recent actions by school boards in Northeast Michigan: ∫ Thomas Catalano and Shannon McKinstry were formally seated on the Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education last week after taking the oath of office. McKinstry was elected in November and will serve a six-year term. Catalano was appointed in December to fill a vacancy and will serve through November 2022. The board also selected Karen Spens as secretary during its organizational meeting. Greg Zurakowski remains board president, Diane Schultz remains vice president, and Ivy Cook remains treasurer. The board also met behind closed doors for an employee disciplinary matter. The closed session was requested by the employee, which is allowed under state law. After emerging from the closed session, the board affirmed Superintendent Nick Hein’s response to the matter.

Jan 11, 2021 Kendell Hardies, 68, went to be with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Jan. 8, 2021 at his home in Hillman, Michigan. He was born to the late Edwin and Mavis (Bartow) Hardies. He graduated from Hillman Community Schools and attended Alpena Community College. He married the love of his life, Diane. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Gabe (Roxanna) Hardies, Josh (Alison) Hardies, Malynda (A.J.) Dubie, and six grandchildren, Lauren, Jordan, Jacob, Justin, Katelynn and Kaleb. Kendell also has four siblings, Noel (Jane) Hardies, Bill (Mary) Hardies, Chris (Donna) Hardies and Dwight (Connie) Hardies and many beloved nieces and nephews. Kendell was a life-long resident of Hillman and there was no other place he wanted to be. He had a life of farming alongside his brothers and family. Jan 11, 2021 ALPENA The Zonta Club of Alpena will be awarding seven scholarships totaling $5,250 for the 2021/2022 academic year to deserving area women, Diane O’Connor, chair of the scholarship committee, has announced. All scholarship applications are available on the Zonta Club of Alpena Facebook page or at zonta15.org under the Alpena link. The following scholarships are available: Young Women in Public Affairs Award offers a $750 scholarship and is awarded to an Alpena High School Senior in recognition of her leadership in public policy, government and volunteer organizations. ALPENA Most Alpena Community College students will begin the spring semester learning online when classes begin next week as the coronavirus continues to spread. College President Don MacMaster said college officials made the decision, which isn’t mandated by the governor or local health department. “For most of our students, the first week of classes will be remote,” MacMaster said. “For a handful of the programs that are very lab-intensive, classes will meet face-to-face starting on Monday.”
