Low Long Lake water level dependent on Mother Nature | News, Sports, Jobs

ALPENA Bereft of runoff from melting snow, Long Lake’s water level is the lowest in recent memory. The lake is feeling the effects of a warm and dry winter, and some property owners on the lake are concerned the low levels will impact their summer’s recreation, according to Gerald Fournier, Alpena County drain commissioner. His office has fielded numerous calls this spring from worried home- and cottage-owners who wonder if the lake’s dam could be managed differently to better regulate the lake’s level, Fournier said.

The Alpena County Youth and Recreation millage has improved the conditions of sports fields and courts all over the county, but its final allocation is coming later this year. ALPENA Groups and organizations wanting to apply for money from the Alpena County Youth and Recreation fund have a few weeks to do so. Youth and Recreation Committee Chairman Tony Suszek said the deadline to submit an application to vie for a portion of the $460,000 is due May 3, at 4 p.m.

Kelley, a Democrat, served from 1961 to 1999, winning statewide election 10 times. He moved to Naples, Fla., in 2020 and died Friday night, spokesman Chris De Witt said. ALPENA Frank Kelley, Michigan’s longest-serving attorney general, with ties to Northeast Michigan, died Friday in Naples, Florida. He was 96 years old.
