Upstate NY College Aims to Fill the Need for Skilled Biopharma Workforce

Dec 23, 2020 Upstate Issues Podcast The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly put a spotlight on vaccine research and manufacturing. Right here in the Capital Region we have the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Center for Biopharmaceutical Education and Training (CBET) where students will learn about the research and manufacturing of drugs and vaccines. For the uninitiated, ACPHS president Dr. Greg Dewey and CBET Associate Director Dr. Julian Rosenberg both explain biopharmaceuticals, discussing how they have been used previously and their current use in developing COVID-19 vaccines. While biopharmaceuticals are changing lives, researchers and manufacturers are dealing with a shortage of trained professionals here in the US. With state-of-the-art labs and programs, CBET is changing that.

Last week, the FDA granted emergency use authorization for a COVID-19 vaccine created by Pfizer-BioNTech. An article in Medical News today added: The United States is the latest country to join Canada and the United Kingdom in approving a COVID-19 vaccine. Creating a vaccine in under 1 year is no small feat. While the coronavirus pa

Capital Region has 40 FDA-registered drug establishments

ALBANY, N.Y. — While Regeneron Pharmaceuticals’ East Greenbush plant attracts global interest for making its COVID-19 antibody cocktail consisting of two active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), there are several other facilities in the Capital Region that are busy making APIs for other drugs. In fact, the eight-county region has the most API manufacturers out of New York’s 10 economic development regions, according to a Center for Economic Growth (CEG) analysis of the FDA’s Drug Establishments Current Registration Site (DECRS). The United States imports many APIs from China, and the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) is preparing to help the nation reduce its dependence on these imports through its Center for Biopharmaceutical Education and Training (CBET), which will open in January 2021.

How to talk to family and friends who are sceptical about the vaccine

HEAR THEM OUT Given the stress and confusion of this past year, and the government’s unwavering commitment to repeatedly make the wrong decisions at the wrong time, it’s not hard to see why some people may be slightly apprehensive about being told by Boris Johnson and his cronies what to put in their body. With this in mind, it’s important that you afford your sceptical friend or relative the space and time to air their grievances. If you dismiss them out of hand, they’re likely to dig deeper and become further entrenched in misinformation. A common worry is that the pace with which the vaccine was created, tested, and administered was too great to allow for rigorous safeguarding. However, it’s important to remember that this was a global collaboration on a scale never seen before, with governments around the world pooling billions of dollars into research, clinical trials, and data sharing.

COVID-19 vaccine: How was it developed so fast?

for the most recent information on the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted emergency use authorization for a COVID-19 vaccine created by Pfizer-BioNTech. The United States is the latest country to join Canada and the United Kingdom in approving a COVID-19 vaccine. Creating a vaccine in under 1 year is no small feat. While the coronavirus pandemic made a new normal of mask-wearing and physical distancing, it also spurred global cooperation for vaccine research and distribution. However, a vaccine is only effective if people are willing to receive it. With rapid research development, some may be concerned that the vaccine was rushed, and with these concerns comes vaccine hesitancy.
