Libya and Algeria agree to resume flights, reopen land borders and launch maritime lines

By Sami Zaptia. London, 2 June 2021: Libya and Algeria agree to strengthen their bonds of cooperation in the transport sector. The agreement came during discussions between Libya’s Minister of Transport, Mohamed Al-Shoubi with his Algerian counterpart, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Kamal Nasseri in Algiers. The need to open the airspace between the two countries and the return of flights via Libyan and Algerian airlines to enhance cooperation was also agreed. The two Ministers also agreed to reopen land border crossings to facilitate movement between the two countries, as well as to launch a maritime line between the different ports between the two countries to transport goods and passengers.

The sentiment came through during the meeting of Libya’s Minister of Economy and Trade Mohamed Hwej and Algerian Minister of Finance Ayman Bin Abdelrahman last Sunday on the margins of the Algerian Libyan Economic Forum held between 29-31 May in Algiers. During the meeting, Minister Hwej discussed ways to enhance and raise the level of trade exchange between the two countries and expedite the opening of the land border crossing (Al-Dabdab), which Libya sees as representing an economic zone in the Ghadames area.

London, 2 June 2021: The head of the Libyan General Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, Mohamed Raeid signed an economic cooperation agreement with the Director General of the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Wahiba Bahloul last Sunday. The signing took place within the activities of the Algerian-Libyan Economic Forum held from 29-30 May held Algiers. The General Union of Chambers said the agreement contributes to empowering the Chambers of Commerce in the two countries and facilitating means of cooperation between them and encouraging the sponsorship of trade and industrial forums and conferences between the two countries.
