Safety on the water - Human powered pleasure craft laws

Article content With the nice weather in place, more people are hitting the lakes and enjoying water related activities and pleasure craft. Stand-up paddle boards (SUP) are more common today than they’ve ever been. The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind citizens to have a safe and enjoyable summer season on the water. Stand-up paddle boarding is a paddling activity whereby the operator navigates standing on a surf board and uses a paddle. Stand-up paddle boarding evolved out of surfing, and has become a means of navigation on water bodies across Canada, including rivers, lakes and oceans. There are rigid plastic and inflatable models.

Public beware of frauds and scams

the public that there are many schemes being used to defraud the public and businesses. OPP Constable Phil Young says the scammers seem to be hitting the local area hard with police receiving several reports. He emphasizes if you receive any unsolicited communication by any means asking for money to be given or that you won money, be cautious and suspicious and never give out any personal, credit or banking information to anyone over the phone, by letter, email, fax or any other means of communication. He says a popular tactic is to present the potential victim with a situation that is either very serious and/or needs immediate attention making them feel pressured to provide information on the spot, but don’t fall for that.

Robbery at Elliot Lake gas bar

SHARE ON: The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police is asking for assistance in regards to a robbery that occurred at a gas bar on Hillside Drive South in Elliot Lake. OPP Constable Phil Young says on Sunday at around 7:00 pm, police were called to the gas bar regarding a robbery that had just occurred. A person entered the building and approached the employee. A handgun was brandished and the entire cash box was stolen. There were no injuries and the suspect departed on foot. Young says the suspect looked to be male, wearing a black toque, checkered black and white bandanna covering his face up to his eyes, black vest with gold/yellow letters stitched on the top left breast side pocket, black and white plaid long-sleeved shirt underneath the vest, black pants, black gloves, light-coloured boots/shoes. Witness described that the firearm that was brandished resembled a revolver.
