Residents of Alconbury and Alconbury Weston turned up today to a Flood Resilience Day event on May 27) to learn about how they can better protect their homes from flooding in the future.
People living in the Alconbury’s experienced severe flooding during Christmas 2020, and the event was an opportunity to learn what can be done to make their properties resilient against flood water.
Renowned flood resilience expert and representative for Ox-Cam PFR Pathfinder Project Mary Dhonau talked to visitors and offered advice, alongside representatives from Flood Re who discuss flood insurance matters.
Terry Lincoln, also from St Ives, watched in horror as floodwater wrecked his home within hours earlier in the year.
He said: “It has been such a mess and the more we look for things, the more we seem to have lost - I lost nearly all my tools and garden equipment as well as everything in the house and garage.

“The main problems were at our end of St Ives, at the Somersham Road/Needingworth Road junction area.
“The only response we ve had so far is that Cambridgeshire County Council say the complaint is now closed.”

Firefighters are dealing with an electricity pole that caught fire this afternoon.

Video footage of the fire was released on their Twitter account by Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue.
“Firefighters were called just before 2.30pm this afternoon; this was the scene prior to their arrival,” they tweeted.
North Road, Alconbury Weston is currently closed both ways between Highfield Ave and High Street, Alconbury, while firefighters deal with the fire.
