Patna, Feb 9 : Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal United (JDU) have set the caste equations right in Bihar, as Nitish Kumar expanded his cabinet on Tuesday after he became the Chief Minister again in November last year. Seventeen legislators were sworn in as Ministers by Governor Fagu Chauhan.
The 17 ministers include 10 from the BJP, six from the JDU and one Independent candidate who has given support to the JDU.
Both the BJP and the JDU have tried to appease the minorities by inducting Syed Shahnawaz Hussain and Jaman Khan into the cabinet, even as the BJP banked on “Kayastha” votes by including Nitin Naveen as one of the Ministers.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitesh Kumar expanded his Cabinet on Tuesday as Governor Phagu Chouhan administered the oath of office to the new ministers at a function at the Raj Bhawan. It must be noted that this expansion comes ahead of the Budget session. Among the 17 new ministers inducted, BJP bags 9 berths while the JD(U) settles for 8 berths. Now the total number of ministers in the state Cabinet comes to 30.
The portfolios that remain with JD(U)
CM Nitish Kumar has clearly gone for the quality rather than quantity of berths while allotting them between JD(U) and BJP. Important portfolios like Home, Personnel, Education, Rural Development, Rural Works, Water Resources remain with the JD(U).
PATNA: Almost three months after the formation of the NDA government, the state cabinet was expanded on Tuesday with the induction of 17 more ministers. With this, the size of the cabinet has gone up to 31 against the maximum strength of 36 ministers.
Out of the 17 ministers inducted on Tuesday, nine are from BJP and eight from JD(U). BJP has a majority in the cabinet with nine new ministers in addition to seven already inducted when the NDA government was formed on November 14, last year. The number of ministers of JD(U), on the other hand, has gone up from four to 12. The Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and Mukesh Sahni-led Vikassheel Insan Party (VIP) have one minister each in the NDA government led by CM Nitish Kumar.
