Alyeska Pipeline wins wildlife award

On July 21, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recognized Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. with an Outstanding Partner Award for contributions made by Alyeska to the conservation of natural resources in Alaska, where it operates the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, or TAPS.
The award recognizes employees recent work with USFWS to update and implement wildlife protection guidelines for oil spills, and their continuing commitment to protecting wildlife during all Alyeska activities.

Alyeska completes maintenance shutdown

Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. has completed a July 17-18 30-hour maintenance shutdown of the trans-Alaska pipeline system, the first major maintenance shutdown of the line since August 2019.
Alyeska said this was the only long-duration shutdown scheduled for this year, with two short-duration shutdo..

MPCA investigating Enbridge Line 3 nontoxic spill - - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is investigating a drilling fluid spill that occurred on the Willow River in Aitkin County at one of Enbridge s construction sites for its new Line 3 oil pipeline. Drilling was halted after the nontoxic spill was discovered early July 6 and containment and cleanup activities were started, MPCA spokeswoman Cori Rude-Young said Monday. The MPCA has been in regular communication with the on-site, independent environmental monitors and Enbridge Energy, and we have inspected the site cleanup, she said. Alyeska Pipeline Service Co.s proactive risk-based maintenance programs latest construction project is designed to protect the 800-mile trans-Alaska oil pipeline from the slow pace of melting permafrost attributed to climate change.
The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, or TAPS, was designed and built to manage changing environmental conditions, including permafrost zones, Alyeskas chief communications officer Michelle Egan recently told Petroleum News in an email.
TAPS, which Alyeska has operated for more than 44 years, includes 420 miles of above-ground pipe on vertical support members, or VSMs, to accommodate permafrost conditions.
