A NEW 10 year cultural strategy for the Bradford District will begin with a number of events this Summer. Yesterday saw the launch of Culture Is Our Plan - a strategy to get more people involved in cultural activities and give Bradford more recognition on the national, and international, stage. And the authors of the new strategy hope that the strategy will provide the push to help Bradford become City of Culture for 2025. The launch took place at South Square in Thornton, one of the District s many cultural organisations. Kick-starting the decade long strategy will be Summer Unlocked - a series of events across the District that will re-introduce arts and culture after over a year of lockdown restrictions.
UK Johnson government sends unelected commissioners to take over services in Liverpool City Council
On March 24, UK Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick announced the Conservative government was sending commissioners to oversee services in Labour Party-run Liverpool City Council (LCC). This followed a police investigation into corrupt business deals, including collapsed multi-million pounds schemes, which led to the arrest of now former Labour Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson.
Announcing the decision, Jenrick told parliament there had been a “serious breakdown of governance” and “mismanagement, breakdown of scrutiny and accountability” in the city.
Three appointed commissioners will be sent to oversee the council s planning, property management, highways and regeneration departments for a minimum of three years, with executive powers allowing them to take over the running completely. IT has been a devastating year for arts venues and events in the Bradford district - but the curtain is rising on spring and summer recovery plans, thanks to a multi-million pound cash pot. More than £300 million has been awarded to thousands of cultural organisations across the UK, in the latest round of support from the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund. The grants are distributed by Arts Council England to theatres, arts centres and other creative organisations including Bradford Theatres (£445,000); Bingley Little Theatre (£76,045); Kala Sangam (£61,500); Black Dyke Band (£38,040); The Brick Box (£35,000); Mind the Gap (£33,915; Fuse Art Space CIC (£33,125) and Ilkley Literature Festival Ltd (£27,000).
