The week in theatre: The Comeback; Six

Sun 20 Dec 2020 05.30 EST All gone. And at what a moment. Last week I celebrated the flinging open of London theatres after lockdown – and looked forward to the moment when plays were not only about Christmas or Covid. This week, shows aiming to transplant audiences from the here and now burst into the bleak midwinter of the West End. Days later, theatres were closed down. It is ironic as well as bitter that The Comebackshould have its run cut short: its quicksilver capers pivot on the difficulty of getting an act together and put on. Ben Ashenden and Alex Owen have recently been running needle-sharp spoof zooms on Twitter, having proved that BBC Radio 4 comedy really can be funny with their show

The Comeback review – comedy that sparkles by double act The Pin

Last modified on Wed 16 Dec 2020 07.49 EST Announcing it earlier this autumn, producer Sonia Friedman hailed this show as “the cure for theatre”. But theatre is still contagious as far as the government is concerned – and The Comeback’s opening performances are to be its last, for a while. That’s a crying shame: this backstage farce by double act The Pin is great fun, and will be even more so when Alex Owen, Ben Ashenden and their helpers bed in to its particular haywire rhythms. The Comeback started life as a 55-minute Edinburgh fringe show, which imagined “Alex and Ben” as a support act for a veteran, vaudeville twosome, now named Jimmy and Sid. Ashenden and Owen play both duos, vying for stage space and the attention of a Hollywood big shot in the crowd, in what evolves into a quickfire, costume-changing, chase-around-the-curtain caper. The DIY overambition that was part of its charm in Edinburgh has had to be sacrificed. In its place, thereâ

Review: The Comeback (Noël Coward Theatre)

© Marc Brenner For reasons that need not detain us here, I ve been watching old Morecambe and Wise routines recently, and marvelling at the ebb and flow that made them one of the funniest double acts ever. Watching them in their late TV heyday, you can see all the work down the years, the smoothing and shaping that made them fit together like two pieces of a complicated puzzle. There s something fascinating about the bond that makes two people into one perfect mechanism for delivering humour – and the relationship behind the scenes that has forged that instinctive understanding. That s what Ben Ashenden and Alex Owen – two Radio 4 funny-men collectively known as The Pin – explore in this endearingly silly play. It is about the comeback tour of one set of comedians – Jimmy and Syd – and the struggling young comedians Ben and Alex who are the support act. All the comics are played by Ashenden and Owen in a piece that is simultaneously a tribute to the double act, and
