Young writers speak out Last May, the Youth Advisory Board of 826 Boston put out a call to Boston students in and residents, grades 7-12, asking for submissions on themes of identity and staying empowered during the pandemic. Who are you?, they asked, and what has influenced who you are? The resulting book, “How We May Appear: Gen-Z’s Reflections on Self-Identity and Equality through Poems, Essays, and Narratives” (826 Boston) offers a rich look at the concerns, struggles, triumphs, and hopes of a rising generation of writers, thinkers, and doers. In her debut book of nonfiction memoir by way of interconnected essays Pham interweaves a recounting of her life thus far with her thoughts on James Turrell, Anne Carson, Frank Ocean, and Agnes Martin (extra points for not mentioning Maggie Nelson in “Blue,” Pham’s essay on Martin). Through her sensitive, curious telling, Pham lobbies for the way in which art can help people learn more about themselves.

Jamie Ducharme (Holt) When Ducharme’s 2019 Time article on Juul came out, it was pretty tough to walk around New York without seeing the vape device. I was excited when I found out that article was to grow into a book, and the story Ducharme offers is a bizarre, somewhat frightening page-turner (and is set to become a docuseries, to boot). —Carliann Rittman, reviews editor The Atmospherians (Atria) A woman named Sasha Marcus is harassed and canceled by men’s rights activists after speaking her mind in response to an internet troll in McElroy’s engrossing novel. Sasha then accepts a new gig helping her failed actor friend start a cult designed for men to purge themselves of toxic masculinity. McElroy’s conceit works on multiple levels, with incisive satire, earnest explorations of male identity, and a gripping plot.

144 cities, including 2 in Utah, could lose status as metro areas

144 cities, including 2 in Utah, could lose status as metro areas Utah.com By: Associated Press , FOX 13 News Posted at 10:43 PM, Mar 09, 2021 and last updated 2021-03-10 00:43:04-05 The federal government is proposing to downgrade 144 cities from the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) designation, and it could be more than just a matter of semantics. Officials in some of the affected cities worry that the change could have adverse implications for federal funding and economic development. Under the new proposal, a metro area would have to have at least 100,000 people in its core city to count as an MSA, double the 50,000-person threshold that has been in place for the past 70 years. Cities formerly designated as metros with core populations between 50,000 and 100,000 people, like Bismarck, North Dakota, and Sheboygan, Wisconsin, would be changed to “micropolitan” statistical areas instead.
