Sumter man arrested after deputies find catalytic converter without a permit in his vehicle

ABC Columbia Jun 10, 2021 2:30 PM EDT Courtesy: Sumter County Sheriff’s Office COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says a man is accused of cutting two catalytic converters off of a van belonging to a business. Deputies say 34-year-old Neal Benjamin Anderson, of Amanda Circle, was arrested on June 3 and charged with possession of burglary tools, unlawful possession of metals, first offense and malicious injury to property, value $2,000 or less. Authorities say the incident occurred on June 1 in the 4700 block of Broad Street. According to deputies, Anderson is accused of damaging a van by cutting two catalytic converters off of it with a saw. Investigators say one of the catalytic converters was found in Anderson’s vehicle during a traffic stop on June 2, and he did not have proof that he owned the catalytic converter or a nonferrous metals permit.

(WOLO): A grandfather and grandson have been arrested in Sumter County under a new state law intended to stifle the catalytic converter theft market.  Sumter County Police say nearly 30 catalytic converters and tools typically used to remove them from vehicles were found inside a van stopped by officers Friday. Neither of the suspects had documentation to show they are authorized to  buy or sell non-ferrous metals in South Carolina.  63-year-old Fikret Beganovic and 22-year old Valentino Beganovic, both of Lawrenceville, Ga., were booked Friday at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and  charged with 28 counts of unlawful purchase or attempt to purchase a catalytic  converter-1st offense.

Crystal Smith Turns Herself In on Evidence Tampering Charge

The mother of alleged teen killer Aiden Fucci surrendered herself to the authorities early Saturday afternoon on a charge of evidence tampering, the St. Johns County, Fla. Sheriff’s Office announced. The mother, Crystal Lane Smith, 35, is being held in the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center on a $25,000 bond, jail records indicate. County Sheriff Robert A. Hardwick said the charges against Smith were related to the alleged murder of Tristyn Bailey, 13, who authorities said was stabbed 114 times by Fucci. Fucci, 14, is charged as an adult with first-degree murder. However, because of his age, he is not eligible for the death penalty.
