From Montana FSA BOZEMAN Due to the national public health emergency caused by coronavirus disease 2019 COVID-19 the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced last week the temporary suspension of past-due debt collections and foreclosures for distressed borrowers under the Farm Storage Facility Loan and the Direct Farm Loan programs administered by the Farm Service Agency. USDA will temporarily suspend non-judicial foreclosures, debt offsets or wage garnishments, and referal to foreclosures to the Department of Justice. Anne Knapke was named deputy assistant secretary for Congressional Relations.
Most recently, Knapke was a senior program officer focusing on nutrition at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Prior to working at the Gates Foundation, Knapke served as legislative director for Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn. Knapke holds a bachelor’s degree from the Ohio State University and master’s degrees in public policy and social service administration from the University of Chicago.
Liz Archuleta was named director in the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs. Archuleta served as a county supervisor for Coconino County, Arizona, where she was the first Latina ever elected to that office in Coconino County. She also served as president of the County Supervisors Association and as chairwoman of the National Association of Counties Public Lands Steering Commit
Robert Bonnie, former Under-Secretary at USDA, along with Leslie Jones, former Deputy Undersecretary at USDA, and Meryl Harrell, former Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Natural Resources and the Environment issued a Transition Memo as part of the CLIMATE 21 PROJECT for American farmers last November (read the full memo here).
Ms. Jones has a terrific agriculture background, attending the College of the Atlantic, then on to Vermont Law School and then became General Counsel at the Wilderness Society. Ms. Jones then went on to become a key person at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) leading the Working Lands program. Ms. Harrell attended Princeton and received her law degree from Yale.
