(Screenshot via Courthouse News) WASHINGTON (CN)  Attorney General Merrick Garland testified before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee late Wednesday on the Justice Department’s $35 billion budget request for 2022. Addressing the panel, the attorney general recalled the words he told his employees on his first day in office: “All of us are united by our commitment to the rule of law and to seeking equal justice under the law,” he said. “We are united by our commitment to protecting our country, as our oath says, ‘from all enemies foreign and domestic,’ and by our commitment to enforcing our country’s laws and to ensuring the civil rights and the civil liberties of our people.”

In this endeavor, we will engage our communities as critical partners. And through our grantmaking, we will support programming at all stages – from the earliest violence interruption strategies to post-conviction reentry services.”

The Monterey County Civil Grand Jury has released a report less than a week after the announcement that they would be conducting an independent audit of the Salinas Police Department.  The Civil Grand Jury includes members from Monterey, Carmel, Marina, Pacific Grove, Salinas and Pebble Beach. The full list of committee members can be viewed on their website. They are authorized to inspect and audit books, records, and financial expenditures.  The audit was kicked off after a local Change.org petition, that has received 338 signatures since its creation on March 31, asked for an independent audit. The concerns were brought to the city by Council members Carla González and Anthony Rocha. Then, the city decided to ask the grand jury to review the concern.
