Laguna Beach takes on graffitied Thousand Steps sea cave after OC Parks denies ownership

Laguna Beach officials said Wednesday that a graffitied Thousand Steps Beach sea cave is located on private property and are working with the property owners to remove the paint. Photos of the usually whimsical beachscape were posted to social media platforms, earning outrage from many Laguna Beach residents exasperated by a segment of visitors who vandalize natural spaces. “We are working with the property owners on cleaning up the graffiti and expect to have the situation resolved soon,” Laguna Beach Community Development Director Marc Wiener wrote in an email.

True West Magazine LT HOWARD CUSHING There were many brave officers in the Frontier Army during the darkest days of the Apache campaigns in the late 1860s and early 1870s but none braver than Lieutenant Howard Cushing. He was a member of one of America’s most famous family of war heroes that included brothers, Milton Jr., Alonzo and John Cushing. Their father, Dr. Milton Cushing Sr. received his medical degree and settled in Zanesville, Ohio where he married his first wife Abigail. They had four children. She died in 1833. Three years later he married Mary Smith and they would have five children, Milton Jr., Howard, Alonzo, John and Mary. He died of tuberculosis in 1847 leaving her penniless and nine children to raise. Abigail’s children were nearly grown. Eventually Milton Jr. and Howard would take jobs to help support the family. When war came in 1861, all of Mary’s four boys joined the Union cause. Mary would outlive all her four sons.

Courtesy of city of Laguna Beach Laguna Beach has agreed to pay more than $1.5 million to settle with state water regulators for its role in a November 2019 sewage spill that temporarily closed 16 miles of Orange County’s coastline. A settlement agreement with the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board resolves an Administrative Civil Liability for the discharge of 1.7 million gallons into the Pacific Ocean. “The San Diego Water Board Prosecution Team has been working closely with the City of Laguna Beach to reach this settlement and provide it for public comment,” Chiara Clemente, enforcement coordinator for the San Diego Water Board, wrote in an email Friday. “We are encouraged by the steps the City is taking to minimize the likelihood of a similar event in the future.”
