The extraordinary
From Landi Kotal to Wagah (UNESCO and Sang-e-Meel, 2021) mixes in equal measure excellent photography and storytelling to merit a status above that of the average coffee-table book that is more frills than substance.
Its storyteller is Salman Rashid, Pakistan’s preeminent travel-writer, who is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. The traveler in him blends with the historian and ethnographer to tell a hitherto untold story of the Grand Trunk Road connecting Peshawar to Lahore. KHYBER: Business centres in Bara, Landi Kotal and Jamrud subdivisions of Khyber remained open on Saturday despite official announcement of a complete lockdown from May 8 to 16.
The district administration and the police looked the other way while traders and shopkeepers at three busy marketplaces kept their businesses open on the first day of so-called lockdown.
Deputy commissioner Mansur Arshad Khan had issued a notification on May 5 about strict observance of the nine-day lockdown along with closure of picnic and tourism spots and all bus and taxi stands in Khyber district in compliance with the directives issued by the provincial home department to contain the spread of coronavirus.

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: Amid strict security arrangements, a large number of people took part in the Yaum-e-Ali mourning processions with religious reverence in Islamabad and various cities of Sindh, including Karachi, Sukkur, Khairpur, Shikarpur, Naushahro Feroze, Ghotki, Kandhkot, Larkana and Hyderabad on Tuesday.
In Karachi, the central procession to mark the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali (RA) was taken out from the Nishtar Park and culminated peacefully at the city’s Imambargah Hussainian Iranian in Kharadar at around 11:30am.
Several smaller processions from separate parts of the city started converging on the Nishtar Park for the central procession, where noted scholar Allama Shahenshah Hussain Naqvi addressed the participants at around 6:30am, highlighting the various noble aspects of the life of Hazrat Ali (RA).
