Print article With Anchorage’s mayoral runoff election finishing up Tuesday, it is impossible not to note H.L. Mencken’s sage observation that “Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule and both commonly succeed, and are right.” One need only look at Anchorage to see his point. The contest for the city’s top executive post with all the snap, pop and sizzle of a sewing bee pits 36-year-old East Anchorage Assemblyman Forrest Dunbar against 62-year-old retired commercial pilot Dave Bronson. Dunbar, a corporate attorney and Alaska Army National Guard captain, is a member of our Assembly’s uber-liberal contingent and a failed Democratic congressional hopeful. He says he has a plan for this fair burg: Spend, spend and spend some more. He cannot say it in those words, of course. He would rather enhance, prioritize and diversify.
David Reamer requested suggestions for notable Anchorage women candidates for his column. There is a treasure trove of hundreds of women who have contributed and helped shape Alaska on the Alaska Women’s Hall of Fame website. It is fascinating and inspiring reading. AWHOF also invites nominations for more candidates, as there is no shortage of remarkable women in our city and all communities in our state. Alaska has long been a notable state for gender equity and opportunities. Women got the vote in 1913, well ahead of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Thanks to Reamer for the spotlight request and to the ADN for David Reamer’s wonderful weekly column, which I look forward to and enjoy every Monday.

A spring tradition resumed in Sitka on Friday (4-16-21) on what felt like the first real day of spring in Southeast: The Annual Blessing of the Fleet.
Southeast Alaska Women in Fisheries organizes the event, in conjunction with the Sitka Lutheran Church and St. Michael’s Orthodox Cathedral. Last year the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the blessing, and this year the traditional large ceremony at Crescent Harbor was replaced with a scaled-back ceremony at the Mariner’s Wall at ANB Harbor.
