Commuters were vocal about the problems that Union Station detours and restrictions caused, especially for disabled riders: The inferior service given to these folks is a disgrace.
While the Oscars put on a glamorous and innovative in-person show at Union Station on Sunday, organizers faced criticism over the weekend for the impact its production restrictions had on those outside of Hollywood.
The station remained open to riders before, during and after the ceremony for bus, rail, Metrolink and Amtrak use, but commuters were rerouted to the east entrance as production took over Union Station West, the Ticket Concourse and Grand Waiting Room. Bus stops, ride-share pickups and parking have also been relocated for most of the month, and this weekend saw a web of street closures including Alameda Street, Main Street and Temple Street.

While the likes of Glenn Close, Daniel Kaluuya and Zendaya were quietly escorted into Union Station on Sunday for the 93rd Academy Awards, a different kind of procession was unfolding around the corner: Angelenos struggling to find a COVID-19 testing site that had been relocated from the front of the transit station to the backside of the complex to accommodate Oscars festivities.
“It was hard for us to find it,” said Wendy Moncada, who was accompanying her boyfriend to the testing site about an hour before the 5 p.m. telecast kicked off. “The whole parking situation was difficult, and there was no drop-off or pickup.”
