Group studies changes in Alabama school building approval process AL.com 1 hr ago Mike Cason, al.com © Mike Cason | mcason/al.com Former Alabama state Finance Director Bill Newton speaks to a group studying changes in oversight of building and safety code compliance in public buildings.
The Alabama Legislature approved a bill this year to move the oversight of school construction projects of $500,000 or less from a state agency to local school boards.
House Bill 220 did not change the oversight of that state agency the Division of Construction Management on school projects of more than $500,000. HB 220 did remove all community college projects, regardless of size, from the DCM’s oversight.

12 Alabama counties now under burn ban AL.com 48 mins ago Leada Gore, al.com
Twelve Alabama counties are now under a burn ban that will last until October, according to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
The ban, designed to protect air quality, includes Baldwin, DeKalb, Etowah, Jefferson, Lawrence, Madison, Mobile, Montgomery, Morgan, Shelby, Russell, and Talladega counties.
Officials said some agricultural and silvicultural burning is allowed in these counties but requires prior approval from ADEM and the Alabama Forestry Commission.
Unless prohibited for drought and safety reasons, the burn ban does not prohibit the use of outdoor fireplaces and campfires. It does prohibit the open burning of wood, tree trimmings, brush and debris generated by land clearing and construction activities, all in an effort to reduce the formation of ground-level ozone.
