SIDNEY Sister Ginny Scherer seems a little embarrassed about all the hoopla. Her focus has always been her students rather than herself, but her retirement after 58 years in the classroom is certainly something to celebrate.
“I’m not sure where the years have gone,” said Scherer. “I don’t feel my age because the Lord has blessed me with good health.” The long-time head of the Science Department at Lehman Catholic High School does not seem like an octogenarian either. SMITHFIELD – Three students will share the top of the class this year with two co-valedictorians, Maximilian Chelminski and Cameron Kasbarian, and a salutatorian, Victoria Richard, as Smithfield High School transitions out of its traditional class ranking system.
SHS Principal Dan Kelley said the year was already challenging enough, and students kept the competition tight for top rankings. He said he was proud of the school’s top three, who persevered among a class of 165 students.
The Autrey Mill Middle School Science Olympiad team participated in the state science competition at the University of Georgia last weekend cinching 4th place.
The AMMS team, led by Science teacher Kayla Garner, consisted of 30 dedicated students in grades six through eight. Garner had this to say, âOur Science Olympiad students have done fabulously in their individual events: despite the unique challenges this academic year has presented. I appreciate our studentsâ flexibility and patience as Science Olympiad competed virtually for the first time. Students were able to quickly troubleshoot any technical issues that occurred during testing and devoted a great deal of time each week to prepare for the events.â
