Sam Onyeaka was one of the stormtroopers who made Enugu Rangers African Winners Cup champions in 1977. A veteran of many battles, he survived the Civil War, survived Demba Diop Stadium, Dakar and met with Idi Amin in Kampala. One outcome that continues to haunt him is the 3-0 loss to Insurance of Benin in the grand finale of the 1978 Challenge Cup.

The big wigs of Nigerian football or top government officials were not there, neither was the fanfare and ceremony usually associated with the burial of a national hero, during Yisa Sofoluwe’s burial on Wednesday at Atan Cemetery, Yaba, Lagos.
Yet, this was a man who toiled for close to a decade in his quest to put the country’s name on the global football map.
Former Super Eagles defender Sofoluwe died on Tuesday evening at the Intensive Care Unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, after being diagnosed with mild cerebral atrophy, a brain disease. He died at the of age 53.

Sofoluwe to be buried today

The remains of former Super Eagles defender, Yisa Sofoluwe will be buried today at the Atan Cemetery.
Former Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, Waidi Akanni, who was a close friend and former teammate of late Nigeria international told
Sports Vanguard that Sofoluwe’s body was taken from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital early this morning to his residence in Ikorodu and that arrangements had been concluded for his burial at 4 pm, at the Atan Cemetery.
“We are here with members of his immediate family at his residence in Ikorodu,” Akanni said, affirming that “he will be laid to rest at 4, this evening at the Atan cemetery.”

Former Super Eagles defender, Yisa Sofoluwe, died on Tuesday night at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). He was aged 53 years.
Sofoluwe nicknamed ‘Dean of Defence’ by the late Radio Nigeria Commentator, Ernest Okonkwo, died from the cerebral atrophy ailment that took him to the ICU of LUTH. He was waiting for surgery before he joined his ancestor last night.
A former colleague of Sofoluwe in the senior national team, Waidi Akanni who has been in the forefront rallying support for the ailing footballer, confirmed the death of the former Abiola Babes FC defender last night.
“We lost him. Yisa Sofoluwe could not wait for help to come for his surgery before he died on Tuesday evening,” observed the distraught Akanni on telephone last night.
