YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) A six-term U.S. House member who represents a district that sprawls across eastern and southeastern Ohio has ruled out joining the Republican U.S. Senate primary race.
Rep. Bill Johnson, 66, told the Vindicator newspaper for a report Wednesday that he was concerned about the fund-raising that would be needed for the 2022 GOP primary for the seat that Republican Sen. Rob Portman is leaving.
Portman decided earlier this year against seeking a third term, setting off a scramble to succeed him in what will be one of the nation’s mostly closely watched 2022 races

Timken is among five contenders in the U.S. Senate primary in Ohio, which is still a year away; the five already are working furiously to cast themselves as Trump s favorite in the open race. That work can be awkward and far from subtle, as they jockey for a Trump endorsement that could help someone break out of the crowded GOP pack in a state the former president twice carried by 8 percentage-point margins.Aaron Doster/APShow MoreShow Less

Hillbilly Elegy author and venture capitalist J.D. Vance has told friends and associates that he intends to enter the race for U.S. Senate in Ohio, Axios has reported. Vance has been expected to don his spandex and enter the cage match to replace Rob Portman for weeks, at least since tech billionaire Peter Thiel threw $10 million into a political action committee supporting him.
Vance will join a psychotic band of Republican hopefuls that now officially includes former state GOP chairwoman Jane Timken, car salesman Bernie Moreno, businessman Mike Gibbons and balls-to-the-wall Trump flunky Josh Mandel, all of whom are prepared to debase themselves as necessary to secure the endorsement of Donald Trump.

As expected, Cleveland businessman Mike Gibbons will run for the United States senate seat to be vacated by Rob Portman next year. Gibbons, a Republican, was one of four prospective candidates vying for the favor of Donald Trump at a secret Mar-a-Lago meeting last month, which Politico documented in detail. The others in attendance were Jane Timken, Josh Mandel and Bernie Moreno.
Gibbons, like Trump and Moreno, is a businessman, not a politician, a status he wields in the opening seconds of an introductory video, (above). He is the managing director of a private investment firm located in downtown Cleveland and calls himself blunt, plain spoken and someone who [tells] it like it is.
