One of our favorite movies from 2020’s virtual Fantastic Fest was Maria Bissell’s feature debut
How to Deter a Robber. It’s a hilarious and touching melding of the outlandish and mundane. On the one hand, it’s about families dealing with each other at the holidays; on the other, it’s a thriller about fending off some dangerous (and fairly inept) burglars. I appreciated its heightened reality that never strays too far into unbelievability. It’s a fine line, and as you can see from our exclusive trailer, it walks it very well.

Cine Las Americas International Film Festival returns to Austin this summer for a five-day celebration of movies centering Latinx people around the world and Indigenous people of the Americas. Last week, organizers dropped the feature film lineup.
The festival previously announced that its 23rd edition would feature a combination of in-person and online film events. It ll get a big kickoff on June 9, as Mariem Pérez Riera’s documentary Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It opens up the fest with a screening under the stars at Meanwhile Brewing Co. in Southeast Austin. The film, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of the legendary performer s career.

Director Amelia Moses’ second film is a new take on an old genre, the werewolf movie. In the Canadian-made Bloodthirsty, pop singer Grey (Lauren Beatty) decamps to the rural house of shifty music producer Vaughn Daniels (Greg Bryk). There, Grey begins work on new material but finds herself giving in to her animalistic side.
We talked to the 28-year-old Montreal-based director, who grew up in Vancouver, about body horror, American Werewolf in London, and virtual movie premieres.
Q: Your first short films are horror, as is your first movie, Bleed With Me. Have you always been a fan?

After an extremely weird year of cancellations, adaptations, and virtual film festivals, things appear to be slowly inching back toward “normal” in the United States in the film fest lineup. Fantastic Fest announced today that this year’s event will be held in person in Austin, Texas, while new Sundance 2022 details reveal that next year’s festival will be another hybrid of in-person screenings and virtual ones.
