SC names ex-ASG Maninder Singh, advocate Batra SPPs in coal scam cases

New Delhi, April 16 : The Supreme Court has appointed former Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh and advocate Rajesh Batra as special public prosecutors (SPPs) in the trial of coal scam cases filed by Enforcement Directorate (ED).
A bench headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and comprising Justices A.S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian said: We hereby appoint (i) Maninder Singh, senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General of India; and (ii) Rajesh Batra, advocate as Special Public Prosecutors in the place of R.S. Cheema. R.S. Cheema may get relieved upon the newly appointed prosecutors taking charge.

The Supreme Court has appointed former Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh and advocate Rajesh Batra as special public prosecutors (SPPs) for trial of multi-crore coal scam cases filed by Enforcement Directorate.
The order was passed by the Court after Senior advocate R S Cheema, who was appointed SPP in 2014 by the top court, sought permission to be relieved of the responsibility citing his age and shortage of law officers assisting him.
The Central Government proposed the names of former ASG Maninder Singh and Rajesh Batra.

“We consider it appropriate to nominate Arun Bhardwaj and Sanjay Bansal as Presiding Judges of Special Court Nos.1 and 2 respectively. They shall be appointed in the order of their seniority. Ordered accordingly,” a Bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde said in its order.

The Supreme Court on Monday appointed two judicial officers, Arun Bhardwaj and Sanjay Bansal, as special judges to conduct trials in the sensational coal scam cases pending since 2014 here.
Earlier Special Judge Bharat Parashar was conducting trials in around 40 coal scam cases and has been replaced by two judges after the apex court recently took note of a letter from the Delhi High Court s Registrar General that permission be granted to nominate or post another suitable presiding judicial officer as special judge in place of Parashar.
