Yesterday the Museum of Romani Culture in the Czech Republic held an online commemorative ceremony honoring the memories of the victims of the Holocaust who were imprisoned in what was referred to at the time as a
Zigeunerlager in Lety u Písku; due to the COVID-19 pandemic the traditional commemorative ceremony, which is usually attended by 100 or more people paying their respects, could not be held directly at the site of the former camp. At 8 AM the museum sent out a video greeting from Čeněk Růžička, a longtime organizer of the commemorative ceremonies at Lety, in his role as the chair of the Committee for the Redress of the Roma Holocaust in the Czech Republic.

Annual commemoration of the Holocaust of the Roma at Lety u Písku, Czech Republic, is postponed due to the pandemic

(PHOTO: Richard Samko, Romea.cz) Because of the ongoing viral pandemic, the commemorative ceremony that we annually convene on 13 May at the site of the burial ground of the victims of the concentration camp for Romani people near Lety u Písku is being postponed until a more appropriate time from the standpoint of the Government measures, Čeněk Růžička, chair of the Committee for the Redress of the Roma Holocaust in the Czech Republic, told news server Romea.cz on 21 April. During the communist regime in the 1970s, the former location of the camp was partially built over by an industrial pig farm.

Celebrations of 8 April are being held online this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Concerts and discussions are being held online to mark 50 years since the first World Roma Congress in 1971.
The Czech Philharmonic will be performing a gala concert with Romani musician Ida Kelarová, while the Museum of Romani Culture is marking its own 30th anniversary. The day has been celebrated since 1990.
The first international meeting of Romani representatives was held on 8 April 1971 near London. The first World Roma Congress laid the foundations for establishing the International Romani Union.
Participants from 14 countries, including the former Czechoslovakia, adopted the Romani anthem and flag, as well as the official designation of themselves with the term Roma . Below is a summary of the events planned for the 50th anniversary.

The board of directors of the Institute of the Terezín Initiative (ITI) in the Czech Republic has decided that this year s commemorative reading of the names of the dead on Yom Hashoah will not include the names of the Romani victims of racial persecution in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. However, the director of the ITI, Tereza Štěpková, disagrees with that decision and says the event, which falls on 8 April this year, will go ahead as planned and will read Holocaust victims names from the Romani community.
