Not Biden’s tax proposals, market more wary of global slowdown: Arvind Sanger SECTIONS Last Updated: Apr 23, 2021, 11:03 AM IST Share Synopsis “The tax proposals by Biden saw just a modest pullback but the other issues have caused stocks to sell off a lot more.” ETMarkets.com The news overnight in the United States is that President Joe Biden is slated to propose a much higher capital gains tax for the rich, hiking the rate to about 39.6% for those earnings a million dollars or more from 20% at present. Your view? First of all, it is not just 39.6%. There is another three point something percent and so it becomes 43% plus and clearly this would be negative for equities. He is talking about raising capital gains tax and also corporate taxes. While this government is doing the much needed investment in infrastructure, it is left of centre and investor unfriendly in terms of its tax proposal. So the market is clearly not happy.
