By: Dayle Da Silva• Desron Rodriguez, the hiker commonly referred to as ‘Lava Man’ and who became embroiled in controversy for his trips to the summit of the La Soufrière volcano during a period of explosive eruptions, was arrested on April 20. Commissioner of Police Colin John confirmed in a telephone interview with THE VINCENTIAN on Wednesday, that Rodriguez had been detained by the police although up to the time of the interview he was yet to be charged.

The initial blast from La Soufriere, the highest peak in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, sent plumes of hot ash and smoke 6,000 meters (20,000 feet) into the air Friday morning, the local emergency management agency said.  A second, smaller eruption took place Friday afternoon, belching out a 4,000-meter-high ash cloud, the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre said.
