Thrill seeker arrested Desron ‘Lava Man’ Rodriquez ‘braving’ the heightened elements during his most recent climb to the summit of the volcano. By: Dayle Da Silva• Desron Rodriguez, the hiker commonly referred to as ‘Lava Man’ and who became embroiled in controversy for his trips to the summit of the La Soufrière volcano during a period of explosive eruptions, was arrested on April 20. Commissioner of Police Colin John confirmed in a telephone interview with THE VINCENTIAN on Wednesday, that Rodriguez had been detained by the police although up to the time of the interview he was yet to be charged.

Desron ‘Lavaman’ Rodriguez released from police custody Desron Rodriguez Social Share ‘National hero material’, ‘brave’, ‘thrill seeker’, ‘explorer’, ‘volcano hunter’ and ‘doltish’, are just some of the names that Desron Rodriguez has been called on social media.  Since La Soufriere volcano started erupting in December 2020, Rodriguez has posted several videos on his social media platforms, allegedly showing him at the summit of the erupting volcano.   In some of the videos and photos, other persons are seen with Rodriguez.   The trips to the volcano, located in the red zone, caused the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) to issue a statement stressing that persons who journey into the red zone will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Reports reaching the Barbados TODAY team in St Vincent and the Grenadines indicate that Desron Rodriguez was picked up by local law enforcement this afternoon. The developments are unfolding less than 48 hours after the lead scientist monitoring the La Soufrière volcano, Professor Richard Robertson, Monday described as “dotish” and not an act of bravery Rodriguez’s decision to climb the active volcano on Sunday. It’s is unclear at this stage if any charges have been filed.
