IPL 2021 postponed as Covid-19 count increases

IPL 2021 has been postponed, following several positive Covid-19 cases across franchises over the past couple of days. The move was confirmed by IPL chairman Brijesh Patel, who said it was for the safety of all stakeholders.
In a media statement, the IPL said the decision was unanimously taken by the tournament s Governing Council along with the top brass of the BCCI. The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and the other participants involved in organising the IPL, the statement said. This decision was taken keeping the safety, health and wellbeing of all the stakeholders in mind.
However, barely 24 hours later, a statement released by the BCCI, in conjunction with the IPL GC, explained the decision had been made to postpone the IPL to ensure the safety of all involved with the competition. The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and the other participants involved in organising the IPL. This decision was taken keeping the safety, health and wellbeing of all the stakeholders in mind, the statement read. These are difficult times, especially in India and while we have tried to bring in some positivity and cheer, however, it is imperative that the tournament is now suspended and everyone goes back to their families and loved ones in these trying times.

Two Indian Premier League players have tested positive to COVID-19, forcing the postponement of Monday night s match (midnight AEST) between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Kolkata pair Varun Chakaravarthy and Sandeep Warrier have both returned positive tests but the rest of the KKR contingent, including Australian players Pat Cummins and Ben Cutting as well as assistant coach David Hussey, have tested negative.
