Moment police break up children s birthday party

A student party attended by up to 150 revellers was shut down by police for breaching coronavirus rules - as officers elsewhere fined a swimmer £200 after he drove 100 miles to take a dip in the flooded River Severn. Footage from Sheffield shows dozens of students attempting to flee the Ranmoor Student Village as officers descended on the illicit party on Thursday, which took place in breach of lockdown restrictions.  Police issued more than £34,000 worth of fines following the gathering, including a £10,000 penalty for the organiser of the party and more than 30 Fixed Penalty Notices of £800.     Fourteen officers were in attendance, and one was injured as students attempted to break out of fire exits and set off alarms in order to get away.

Even with vaccines, we still need treatments for Covid So what works?

Last modified on Wed 3 Feb 2021 06.50 EST Vaccines may have been described as the great escape route from the Covid pandemic – but treatments, which are bringing down death rates, will be needed as much as ever in the era of jabs because the virus is not expected to go away in the foreseeable future, experts say. “It’s going to take a long time to vaccinate the world,” said Peter Horby of Oxford University, chief investigator of the Recovery trial into Covid treatments and chair of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag). “I don’t know what the estimates are, but we’ve already seen issues with manufacturing scale-up and difficulties in delivering at scale.

Pop-up shop gives charity a £10,500 cash boost

GENEROUS shoppers and volunteers in Trowbridge have raised more than £10,000 for the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group. The charity’s Trowbridge branch would like to thank everyone who visited their Christmas pop-up shop in Castle Place Shopping Centre and supported the cancer unit at Bath’s Royal United Hospital. The amount raised is all the more impressive because of the pandemic, according to BCUSG vice-chairman Sue Oliver who is also the volunteer shop manager. “Due to Covid, the running of the shop was of course totally different this year,” said Sue. “Goods coming in had to remain in store for 48 hours before being moved into the shop. We had to limit the number of customers and helpers at any one time and various new rules including plastic screens had to be adopted for the safety of all.
