Glasgow becomes first convention bureau to join Tourism Declares

20 April 2021 - Submitted by Olivia Powell Submitted by Olivia Powell on 20 April 2021 The Glasgow Convention Bureau (GCB) has announced that it has become the first convention bureau in the world to join Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency. Launched in January 2020 as a voluntary initiative to align tourism and travel with the target to cut global emissions in half by 2030, Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency recognises the tourism industry s impact on the climate as well as its potential to influence positive change. The initiative now has 225 members representing business, destinations and NGOs from most sectors of the industry. This announcement builds on the city’s position as the fourth most sustainable conference destination in the world and the only UK city to be included in the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS–Index).

Glasgow secures future conference business worth £84m since April 2020

Despite the continuing challenges facing the meetings industry, Glasgow Convention Bureau reports the city has secured 28 new conferences from a range of sectors since 1 April 2020. The conferences will welcome to Scotland an estimated 36,000 delegates and have an economic value of £84m (US$116.7m). Throughout the last year Team Glasgow has championed a partnership approach, working to keep the city front of mind for conference organisers. Glasgow Convention Bureau (GCB) worked closely with the city’s academic Conference Ambassadors to secure future conferences, which include the 2022 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Europe Annual Conference and the 2022 bi-annual AMA SERVSIG Conference.
