Tribute to Noorjehan at PNCA

Islamabad: PWA (Progressive Writers Association) and PNCA (Pakistan National Council of the Arts) joined hands to pay tribute to Madam Noorjehan today (Friday) at PNCA. The audience was taken back to a small town in Qasoor in 1926 where Noorjehan was born as Allahwasai. She learnt to sing early in life (even before she learnt to cry). The family went to Kolkata around 1930 and Allahwasai became Baby Noorjehan She made a name for herself with Punjabi songs. The family returned back to Lahore.
What follows is a long journey. Noorjehan worked in films at Lahore during early thirties. She later left for Mumbai, worked and made a name in Urdu films. Got married to film director-editor Shaukat Hussain Rizvii. Her notable films in Mumbai included ‘Bari Maa’, ‘Zeenat’, ‘Anmol Ghari’ and ‘Jugno’. In 1947, the couple decided to return to what was now Pakistan. The friends, including Dilip Kumar, tried to talk them out

LAHORE: Actor Ejaz Durrani, ex-husband of late Madam Noor Jehan and father of three of her children, passed away here on Monday. He was 85.
His funeral prayers were held after Zuhar prayers in Garden Town on Monday which was participated by a large number of people and his fans and he was laid to rest here in Lahore. People from different walks of life, including Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, expressed their grief over his demise and extended heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family.
Ejaz Durrani had been ill for quite a long time. He was a film actor, director and producer who remained active from 1956 to 1984.He was one of the most prominent stars of the Pakistani film industry and known for hits such as Heer Ranjha in which he played the titular Ranjha in 1970. His first film was Hameeda in 1956 but it wasnât until 1957 that he got a break with the lead role in Bara Admi, directed by Humayun Mirza.

A global expert in contemporary Islam will speak at a Kalamazoo College Religion Department virtual event about a prolific figure in Pakistani music whose voice empowered queer identities.
Amanullah De Sondy, a senior lecturer at University College Cork in Ireland and an affiliate of the University of Glasgow’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies, will provide the 2021 Armstrong Lecture at 5 p.m. Tuesday, February 23. His talk, titled “Music, Empowerment and Queer Pakistani Identities: The Case of Madam Noor Jehan 1926-2000,” will discuss the flamboyant Noor Jehan, an entertainer known lovingly to many as Madam ji.
