Innovative Electrical King of the Derwent

Whistler - Derwent Yacht Race © Colleen Darcey Whistler has been crowned overall winner of this year s Innovative Electrical King of the Derwent. Owned and skippered by Drew Latham the boat performed well in a fleet of 25 yachts in a moderate easterly breeze. Race Officer, Ian Ross set a perfect 3 lap course, on the River Derwent, which provided opportunity for Whistler to sail a strong tactical race and take out the coveted IRC result. Alive, the pocket maxi, sailed clear off the start line and finished in a time of 1 hour 5 minutes, taking 3rd place on IRC. A perfect day for the iconic King of the Derwent yacht race, with a consistent easterly breeze, giving all the competitors a fair opportunity to win said Ross.

Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race start

Line honours leader Alive in the TasPorts Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race © Colleen Darcey Alive, skippered by Duncan Hine, is leading the TasPorts Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race (L2H) on line honours. A late entry in the race, Alive, a Reichel-Pugh 66, sailed by a Tasmanian crew pulled together from some of the boat s regulars when in Hobart, was the first boat to Low Head, and is expected to break the race record of 1 day 09 hours 33 minutes and 58 seconds, which was set in 2009. It was a tough start for the 31-boat fleet which started the race in very light conditions at Inspection Head, Beauty Point, on the Tamar River, at 1130 today. Talofa, a Northshore 38 owned by Rob and Judi Cawthorn and a regular in the L2H race, was squeezed out on the start line and had to restart the race, while Black Magic, skippered by Bellerive Yacht Club Commodore, Graham Mansfield, was becalmed before the race, giving the fleet a 10-minute advantage.

Launceston to Hobart: Sandy McManus and the Twitch syndicate

Twitch on the River Derwent sailing in the BYC Crown Series Regatta © Jane Austin Sandy McManus started sailing an NS14 with a neighbour as a 12-year-old from the Lauderdale Yacht Club. Wind the clock forward to 2020 and McManus is lining up for her fourth Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race on Twitch. So, what drives this calm and quiet achiever and how does she rate her team s chances in the upcoming Launceston to Hobart Race? McManus moved from the NS14 into a 13-foot Hawke catamaran in her youth, but it was some years later before she set foot on a bigger keelboat, crewing for Ian Johnston on his Doven 30, and she has never looked back. The modest, Hobart-based sailor considers herself a relatively inexperienced offshore competitor compared to her crew mates on Twitch, and while she may not have a lot of offshore races under her belt, she is certainly building her blue water miles.
