50s themed dance to return to Hanford as part of Flashback Festival

Among the events planned for Hanford’s Flashback Festival is a 1950s-themed dance called a Sock Hop, which has roots in town going back decades. The event, which will take place from 7-10 p.m. Friday, July 30, in Civic Auditorium, takes after the Hanford tradition of Melco dances, said Hanford Chamber of Commerce President Amory Marple. She said the 130th birthday was a perfect time to bring a 50s-themed dance back to town. “The Chamber will all be dressed up in 1950s clothes, with 50s themed decorations,” Marple said. “The band doesn’t play music as far back as the 50s, they play stuff from the 60s, so it will be a little disjointed but overall it will be a themed Sock Hop.”

Kings, Tulare counties expected to move into red tier Tuesday

But only one made the jump. Tulare County met the metrics to move from the purple, or widespread risk tier, to the red, or substantial risk tier. Kings County remains in purple, despite the state s indication last week it could move to red as well. All other Valley counties are still in purple except Mariposa, which is in the orange, or moderate risk category. In Tulare County, businesses are getting ready to enter the red tier, including Maximo s Taqueria. The restaurant finally opened its doors in Downtown Visalia during the winter surge of COVID-19 cases. We were a little behind, finally got the approval, opened the doors, and nobody was around, really, General Manager Alex Guerrero said.

Chamber of commerce hosts picnic in the park

HANFORD — Families gathered on Saturday morning for the Hanford Chamber of Commerce’s Picture Day/Picnic in the Park for their upcoming mobile app. Amory Marple, CEO and executive director of the Hanford Chamber of Commerce, said she noticed more people were coming out to Civic Park and after bouncing around ideas with parks and recreation and Main Street Hanford, she decided to invite people to come to the park. “This year, we didn’t have any events to take pictures at and we need them to use for our print material,” Marple said. “I didn’t want to use pictures from the years before because it’s just not a true representation of current times.”
