A new reissue of the UK groupâs 1979 album captures David Sylvian and his bandmates as they evolved from their glam-influenced early years into the experimental electronic pop of their final two LPs.
Before they became synonymous with heady, ethereal synth pop, Japan started out under the sway of Bowie and Bolan. On their first two albums,
Adolescent Sex and
Obscure Alternatives, both released in 1978, singer/guitarist David Sylvian affected a nasal sneer while the rest of the band (drummer Steve Jansen, bassist Mick Karn, keyboardist Richard Barbieri, and guitarist Rob Dean) backed him with icy, funk- and glam-infused rock. They even had the cheek to cover the decidedly unhip âDonât Rain on My Parade,â a song from the 1964 Broadway musical

Kings of Leon are on course to land their sixth number one album in the UK with When You See Yourself.
The US rock band last topped the UK albums chart in 2016 with WALLS, which is an acronym for We Are Like Love Songs.
Their previous releases Mechanical Bull (2013), Come Around Sundown (2010), Only By The Night (2008) and Because Of The Times (2007) have also topped the charts.
