Myanmar protests continue amid calls for a general strike

Authorities in Myanmar have threatened to take “action” against protesters who break the law as police fired water cannon at peaceful demonstrators in Naypyidaw and thousands of people took to the streets of major cities for a third day to denounce last week’s putsch. A statement read by an announcer on state-run MRTV on Monday said there had been violations of the law and threats of force by groups “using the excuse of democracy and human rights”. “Action must be taken according to the law with effective steps against offences which disturb, prevent and destroy the state’s stability, public safety and the rule of law,” the statement said.

Share on Twitter Thousands of anti-coup protesters in Myanmar poured back onto the streets Sunday, as an internet blackout failed to stifle growing outrage at the military s ouster of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The fresh rally followed the largest protests to date on Saturday, when tens of thousands came out in cities across the country to condemn the coup that brought a 10-year experiment with democracy to a crashing halt. Thousands of chanting protesters marched in Yangon, backed by a din of car horns. They held up banners that said Justice for Myanmar and We do not want military dictatorship . Some waved the signature red flags of Suu Kyi s National League of Democracy (NLD) party.

And the Tatmadaw - the Myanmar Armed Forces - knows it better than anyone. There s no smoking gun, of course, but it s virtually impossible that Beijing had not been at least informed, or consulted , by the Tatmadaw on the new dispensation. China, Myanmar s top trade partner, is guided by three crucial strategic imperatives in the relationship with its southern neighbor: trade/connectivity via a Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) corridor; full access to energy and minerals; and the necessity of cultivating a key ally within the 10-member ASEAN.
