E-commerce giant Amazon has expanded its food delivery service Amazon Food across Bengaluru. The move increases its direct competition with established local players including Tencent-backed Swiggy and Alibaba-backed Zomato. Amazon Food is now available across 62 pin-codes covering key localities like Whitefield, HSR, Sarjapur, Koramangala, Indiranagar and MG Road. The other such areas include Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Frazer Town, Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar and Vijayanagar. Distressed with Amazon’s legal position over Future Group’s deal with Reliance Industry, the members of All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation penned a passionate letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on March 2.
Citing “unwarranted adventurism,” the letter described Amazon’s efforts to stay FRL-RIL deal as their “Great Game of world domination.”
Traders body AICPD and NGO Prahar in an open letter on Thursday asked Amazon to back off from blocking the Reliance-Future Group deal, alleging mall vendors and suppliers have become collateral damage in the current tussle between the companies. Around 6,000 Indian small vendors and suppliers have dues of Rs 6,000 crore (USD 800 million) from the Future Group. These dues are pending for payment since March 2020. The announcement of Future-Reliance deal in August 2020 had given us hope that our dues will be cleared soon, All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPD) and Public Response Against Helplessness and Action for Redressal (Prahar) said in the letter.
People familiar with the deal said the investment is worth USD 2.5 billion, with about USD 1.5 billion being directly funnelled into Flipkart and USD 1 billion for part of Tiger Global Management s stake. The SoftBank Vision Fund, the world s largest technology-focused fund, will get about 20 per cent stake inFlipkart, they said.

Amazon will commence its manufacturing efforts with contract manufacturer Cloud Network Technology, a subsidiary of Foxconn in Chennai and start production later this year. Last year, the government had announced a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to step up manufacturing capacity. Already Apple and Samsung are producing smartphones in India through their partners.
