Newspaper s offices to move down the street this month
Ames Tribune
A father-and-sons partnership has purchased the Ames Tribune building and has plans to honor the historic structure while adding to the synergy of downtown Ames.
Jerry Nelson, president of Nelson Electric Company, and his sons, Chris Nelson, vice president, and Matt Nelson, manager, have purchased the building located at 317 Fifth St. in downtown Ames.
“We want to add our energy to the other neat things that are going on downtown the work at the Sheldon Munn that Dan Oh is doing, Noir bar opening up, the sidewalk repairs,” Chris Nelson said. “There are a lot of things happening downtown. The opportunity presented itself to play a bigger role in that, and we jumped on it.”
Walter Suza: The place to fight racism is right here and right now
Walter Suza
A reader emailed me a note containing the word “uppity,” which is used as a racist warning to Black people that they’ve forgotten their place. Well, I haven’t forgotten my place. My place is right here and right now. This is where I belong and now is the time to talk about racism.
They are not alone in the attacks. Several other Ames Tribune readers have reached out to me to warn me “not to stir the pot.” To remind me of the N-word. To try “to offer me lessons about the history of America.”

The Ames Tribune is set to move this month into an office space just down Fifth Street.
Offices will be located at 210 Fifth St., which formerly housed the McClanahan Studio gallery. Wife and husband duo Alex and Dan McClanahan own the building and maintain their photography business on the third floor.
“We’re excited to move into the beautiful, sunny space that the McClanahans have created, and we look forward to continuing the Tribune’s longtime presence in downtown Ames,” Tribune editor Kelly McGowan said.
The Tribune got its start in 1868 as the weekly Ames Intelligencer. After having residence in other downtown locations, the newspaper moved to its current space, 317 Fifth St., in 1929.
The fund was in part a response to the CARES Act, which excluded millions of taxpaying immigrants from expanded unemployment benefits and cash payments, organizers said.
The recently passed American Rescue Plan allows households with people of mixed-immigration status to access $1,400 stimulus checks, as well as the minority of undocumented immigrants who have Social Security numbers. But workers who file taxes with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number remain ineligible for payments.
Mundel said this expansion of stimulus eligibility and Iowa s newly opened rental assistance program have been a sign of hope for local families. The state program allows international passports as a legitimate form of ID, and the public charge rule won t affect people seeking assistance, which Mundel said makes the aid more accessible to immigrants.
