The president of Iowa State s Crew Club said Little Wall Lake appeared smooth and the winds were forecast to be low before the club s deadly capsize on March 28 in Hamilton County.
Yaakov Ben-David, 20, a sophomore, and Derek Nanni, 19, a freshman, died when their boat capsized during practice around 9:30 a.m. late last month. Three other crew club members were rescued and survived. In a statement to the Ames Tribune and other media outlets, Crew Club President Alexis Aurandt said she was the coxswain that day. The coxswain sits in the stern, facing front and is in charge of navigating.
Ames Tribune described as difficult teenage years.
He moved around the country in pursuit of a high school diploma, eventually enrolling himself in Washington DC s Ballou STAY Opportunity Academy, a school for economically disadvantaged students who are at least two years behind, the outlet says.
There, Ben-David received just the support he needed to thrive, according to school officials.
Academics came naturally to Ben-David, who despite a lack of formal education scored impressively high on the SATs, the Ames Tribune says citing Ballou officials.
Ben-David started at ISU in 2019 as an aerospace engineering major, and reportedly made the dean s list that fall as an accounting major.

AMES, Iowa (AP) Sheriffs in two central Iowa counties say their offices are looking for the person or people who dumped slain cattle along gravel roads in their jurisdictions.
Two cows and a calf were found dead in Boone and Greene counties on March 10, the Ames Tribune reported. Investigators said the calf, found in Boone County, had its front legs bound with twine.
A red shorthorn cow was found a short distance away in a creek with its throat slashed, Boone County Sheriff Gregg Elsberry said. The carcass of the other cow, also a red shorthorn, was found in a Greene County ditch. Scuff marks on the animals’ hides indicated they were dumped on the roads from a vehicle, authorities said. The animals bloated condition led investigators to believe they had been dead several days.
