PARKERSBURG Downtown PKB has announced its annual Spirit of Downtown awards at its annual board of directors meeting this week.
The meeting was virtually held on Zoom and Facebook Live.
Awards were presented to: Jessie Siefert from the Parkersburg Art Center, Spirit of Downtown Person of the Year, sponsored by WVU Parkersburg. Wood County Society Artbeat Studio, Spirit of Downtown Business of the Year, sponsored by Peoples Bank.
During the research, it was found that Margaret Williams snr, the matriarch of the family, was a generous hostess and a figurehead in the local community. The family worked the land and farm at Pencoed Castle throughout the 19th century, until Ms Williams’ retirement in 1895. She then put the estate up for public auction. Pencoed Castle
Pencoed Castle The mystery of how the paintings ended up in Shropshire was solved when records were located that showed Ms Williams’ son Thomas moved with his family near Bridgnorth in the 1880s, settling and working in the country. Margaret junior married a Frederick Brookes and they also raised their family in the area, continuing the farming tradition.
Neha Gupte, a sixth-grader at Lincoln Middle School, won the 2021 Alachua District Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the name of a legendary Scottish paradise that never changes Brigadoon.
“I didn’t know the story of Brigadoon, but I was able to sound it out,” said Neha after the competition. “My mom also used that word during one of our practices, so I’d already heard it.”
Neha was one of 28 fifth- through eighth-graders from public, charter, private and homeschool settings who competed recently for the title of the district’s top speller. Because of COVID-19, the competition was held through Zoom with a very limited audience.
