Rocky is back, with a new look, to help local veterans groups

A familiar face has returned to Leominster, and he has an all-new look this year. “Rocky” the mannequin is back at his lifeguard post, sitting on the frozen surface of Rockwell Pond behind the Senior Center and the Veterans’ Memorial Center on West Street, waiting for the moment the ice breaks and he sinks below the surface. And anyone 18 years of age and older can guess when that moment will arrive for Rocky officially known as Pvt. Rockwell “Rocky” Pond and possibly win cash. The person who provides the closest time before Rocky falls through the ice will get half the money collected through the 10th annual fundraiser. The other half will be distributed to five local veterans’ organizations: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1897, American Veterans Post 1807, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 24, American Legion Post 151, and Vietnam Veterans Chapter 116.

(WTXL) — Members of American Veterans Post 1776 have worked the last five years to lay the foundation for a daily tribute to families and loved ones laid to rest in Tallahassee. We like to think of our post as a small post doing big things, said Gordon Lightfoot, AMVET Post 1776 Commander. For the past five years, AMVETS Post 1776 has collected donations, adding up to the more than $75,000 they needed to install a bell tower honoring those who served our country. But it was no easy task.
