Avon Farm Giving a Virtual Tour On Wednesday

When we were young, my dad s best friend owned a dairy farm in Arcade, NY. We used to go there quite a bit when we were kids. My brothers even spent entire summers there helping with chores, doing hay, and learning what it took to be farmers. I often helped out there and with hay on a farm that was right around the corner from our house.

AVON, N.Y. Students in grades 8-12 are being offered a way to visit a WNY dairy farm without ever having to leave their home or school.
The American Dairy Association North East and Mulligan Farm of Avon are teaming up to offer a free virtual tour where students can learn directly from dairy farmers about their commitment to care for their cows and the land, and how nutritious milk is produced. The tour is set to take place Wednesday, May 12 at 1 PM. The tour is expected to last between 30-60 minutes.
“While we are unable to welcome guests to our farm, we are thrilled to be able to offer our on-farm experience to students virtually,” said dairy farmer and tour host Emilie Mulligan of Mulligan Farm. “During the tour, our guests will see how we care for our cows, and the environment, while contributing to our local communities.”
For Stacey Copenhaver, giving a farm tour is the perfect way to combine her two passions â education and agriculture.
Copenhaver, a former teacher, has hosted a handful of tours at Talview Dairy, both in person and, more recently, virtually.
She said both methods have positives. In-person tours allow hands-on interaction, such as letting a calf suck on your finger, or getting to feel and smell feed. Virtual tours allow for an unlimited number of people to see the farm.
âI love bringing people to the farm and being able to tell our story,â she said. âThatâs really important to me.â

A free food and milk distribution open to all community members will take place Wednesday afternoon in downtown State College.
YMCA of Centre County’s Anti-Hunger Program, its Student Anti-Hunger Group and State College Borough are partnering for the walk-through event from 4-6 p.m. on Locust Lane between East College Avenue and East Beaver Avenue.
According to the American Dairy Association North East, which works with Pennsylvania dairy farmers to support the Farmers to Families food distributions, boxes containing a gallon of milk along with an assortment of dairy, produce, and meat will be made available while supplies last.
