The leadup to foaling is an exciting time but also one of uncertainty. When will your mare foal? How can you ensure a safe delivery? What steps do you need to take?
To clear up some of the confusion and help breeders pinpoint and prepare for parturition (foaling), two assistant professors and AgriLife Extension horse specialists from Texas A&M University Chelsie Huseman, PhD, and Jennifer Zoller, PhD shared advice during a webinar hosted by the American Youth Horse Council. Here’s what they discussed.
When Will the Foal Arrive?
One of the first things breeders must do to prepare for foaling is calculate the mare’s expected delivery date, which you can do with basic math or the help on an online gestation calculator.
Trustee/Secretary Suzanne D’Ambrose and Executive Director Ellen Taylor will be presenting information about the Harness Horse Youth Foundation’s (HHYF) Activity Boxes at the upcoming American Youth Horse Council virtual symposium on March 4.
Titled Making Lemonade at HHYF, the segment will highlight the creative and design process as well as feature examples of the activities included in the series of four activity boxes developed during the pandemic. HHYF’s comments are included in the broader session “We Did It Virtually - Tips & Tricks For Alternative Learning Options.”
“HHYF has always appreciated the efforts of AYHC because youth educators need strong support systems as well as inspiration” explained Ellen Taylor. “The HHYF/AYHC relationship goes back more than 30 years so it will be fun to share our newest project with others who might be interested and visit with old friends.”
