Energy Ministry to relocate AMERI power
The Ministry of Energy is considering relocating the Ameri Power plant to the Ashanti Region to enhance stable power supply.
Mr. Kwame Agyemang Budu, Managing Director (MD) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), who disclosed this last week Thursday at a press briefing in Kumasi, indicated that the Ministry was poised to embark on the relocation to address the disturbing unstable power supply in Kumasi and its environs.
He attributed the causes of the current outages in the region to the overload of Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) 161 KV transmission line serving the bulk supply point to the North, while the Bui power shot down because of low water level.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has explained that the ongoing installation of new transmission lines is to increase power transfer capacity from 400 megawatts (MW) to 1,900MW to reduce redundancy of power in the transmission lines.
The 26-kilometre lines being constructed from the Volta Sub-station in Tema to Achimota, with an extension to the Accra Bulk Supply Station at Mallam, according to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, Mr Jonathan Amoako-Baah, would significantly improve power supply reliability.
Dumsor’ to return if gov t refuses to take over Ameri plant IES warns LISTEN
FEB 2, 2021
The Institute of Energy Security (IES) has predicted a complete shutdown in power supply in Ghana following the lack of preparedness by government to take over the Ameri Power deal.
The Ameri deal was signed by the government in 2015 at a total cost $510 million to provide 230 megawatts of power for five years.
This was done to assist in resolving the power crisis at the time.
Although Ameri Energy wrote in September 2020 to inform the government of its intention to hand over the plant by the date stated in the contract, the government of Ghana has not yet carried the necessary steps to ensure a smooth handing over.
