Man Jailed 12 Years For Defiling Teenage Girl

Mangochi Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 7, 2021, convicted and sentenced Patrick Bannet, 73, to 12 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL)/for defiling a 13-year-old girl. During court proceedings, Mangochi Police Prosecutor, Sub Inspector Maston Chitsonga, told the court that, both the victim and the accused stay in the same compound. On the night of April 17, 2021 the victim went out to release herself in readiness to go to bed. In the process, the accused emerged from his house and found her under the masawu tree passing urine. Police narrated that the accused grabbed and forced the little girl down and defiled her. He used his hands to cover her mouth so that she could not scream and also threatened to deal with her if she would reveal it to anyone.

OPERATION BASADI ENDS ON A HIGH NOTE IN MANGOCHI

The four-day operation that took place from May 25 led to several recoveries. Mangochi Police Deputy Publicist, Amina Daudi says “Basadi” which means ‘women’ in Sotho and Tswana languages is an operation by female police officers across countries in the SADC Region and it focuses on combating priority crimes particularly against women and children, such as defilement, rape, assault, human trafficking, domestic violence and child labour among others. “The main purpose of the operation is to display the active role female police officers play in law enforcement. “The SADC Region operation was established in 2013 under the theme: ‘We are on it, gender-based violence must stop,’ ” said Daudi.

MANGOCHI POLICE DRILLS WATCHMEN ON SECURITY

Uncategorized As one way to reduce the increase in robberies and break-ins in the district, Mangochi Police has conducted a meeting with the watchmen within the Boma. The meeting took place Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at the police main station where 65 watchmen from various security companies, NGO’s, banks, govt offices and individual shops attended. The team which was led by the officer-in-charge Francis Chisoti, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, pitched into issues of prevention measures, communication skills, tools and equipment in security to shape them into vigilant and effective security personnel. Among others, the watchmen have been encouraged to report matters on time, not to conceal information to the Police, not to leave their posts unattended, patrolling around their premises, not to eat food or drinks brought by strangers and avoid sleeping on duty.
