Date Time Researchers awarded $3.2M state funding to tackle COVID health challenges Researchers from The University of Western Australia have been awarded $3.2 million in State Government funding to tackle COVID-19 health challenges, including creating a system using smartphones to identify children in need of urgent dental care, investigating how antibodies in breast milk protect babies from the virus and preparing a COVID-19 vaccine rollout for hard-to-reach communities. UWA was successful in receiving 10 Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund Focus Grants, announced today by State Health Minister Roger Cook. The projects relate to infection prevention and control, surveillance, diagnostics and therapeutics as well as the direct or indirect impact of COVID-19 across a range of health conditions.

Ken Wyatt AM MP and the Federation of Indian Associations of WA (FIAWA) Chairperson Atul Garg presented Professor Siddique with the award at a joint Australia Day and Indian Republic Day ceremony. Hackett Professor of Agriculture and Director of The UWA Institute of Agriculture, Professor Siddique is a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher with more than 30 years’ experience in agricultural research, teaching, leadership and management in Australia and overseas.

Forrest scholarships support budding young scientists

Date Time Forrest scholarships support budding young scientists Three students have been awarded prestigious Forrest Scholarships to carry out research at The University of Western Australia. They will develop solutions to complex global challenges including understanding the role DNA plays in the sexual maturity and life span of animals, developing an early warning system for coastal erosion and flooding for use across Australia and research into how molecules are composed. They join two recipients who will study at Curtin University and one at Murdoch University. The scholarships are possible through the Forrest Research Foundation, which aims to attract the brightest minds to conduct research in Western Australia.
